Can’t you think of what to give your brother, friend, aunt, cousin from Bilbao on these dates, knowing that she lives in love with Toledo? This has an easy answer
The team of official guides of Toledo on foot have resorted to our memory to compile all those titles that deserve special mention due to their relationship with our imperial city
There are many of you who, during the course of our monumental , immortal or legendary route, ask us about the anecdotes, stories and legends that we share with you, wanting to delve into the subject. Well, here you have it, 9 books that you should add to your library if you want to boast of being a great fan of Toledo:
1. “Alfonso X the Wise. The first great king ” by Adolfo de Mingo Lorente, 2021, The Sphere of Books.
What better way to start this list than by recommending a book about the Wise King , taking into account that this year we are commemorating the VIII Centenary of his birth in our city. Much has been written about Alfonso X, but in this book we find a summary available to all audiences. Don’t worry if we are about to finish 2021, because throughout 2022 we will continue to commemorate the most Toledo king.
2. “ The Toledo that encouraged El Greco. Walks through the city that comforted a surprising artist” , 2017, Francisco José Aranda Pérez and David Martín López (Coords.), Antonio Pareja Editor.
This book focuses not so much on the figure of the artist, but on the urban, social and cultural environment in which he lived and with which he was related, which, how could it be otherwise, conditioned the great artist and his work.
3. “A history of Toledo” by Fernando Martínez Gil, 2017.
Our favourite. There are many Toledo stories, but none as concise and of such quality as this one. In just over 300 pages it goes from the beginning of time almost to today, including history, legends, art, culture, etc. 100% recommendable.
4. “Forgotten Toledo 5 ” byEduardo Sánchez Butragueño, 2021.
It couldn’t be more recent, since it came out this week . What are we going to say about the books in the Toledo Olvidado saga that they cannot say themselves. The best thing is to sit on the sofa, open it and plunge into the fascinating world of historical photography for hours.
5. “Bells of the Cathedral of Toledo: Fat Bell” by Mercedes Alonso Morales , 2005.
That of the Fat Bell of Toledo is one of the most told stories of our city , how could it be less. The largest bell in Spain, 17,744 kg, almost ná . As many kilos as tourist guides that tell a different version. In this book everything comes together, with archival information, so that milongas don’t tell us again about our favorite bell.
6. “El Greco” by Palma Martínez-Burgos, 2013.
Many manuals on the work of El Greco have also been written, but this one written by the professor at the University of Castilla-La Mancha Palma Martínez-Burgos is our favorite. In addition, with total security, it is the cheapest, as it can be found for around €12.
