Activities commemorating the War of Independence

Toledo City Council has organised a series of activities for this weekend (4 October 2008) to commemorate the Bicentenary of the War of Independence.

{mosgoogle}The deputy mayor and councillor for Culture, Ángel Felpeto, presented today the military toilets that will be held in Toledo, on 4 October, on the occasion of the commemoration of the Bicentenary of the War of Independence. Among the activities programmed for this celebration, there will also be a march-homage that simulates the one carried out in its day by the Battalion of Volunteers of the University of Toledo in 1808 in which its Supreme Defense Board was escorted on a trip from Toledo to Cadiz.

Felpeto commented that this recreation will be carried out with 20 characters with “suitable suits and thought for the occasion” and in it will act young volunteers as well as members of the group of theater toledano “Cervantes”.

Start at 16.

This event, proposed as a complement to the military toilet, is the second time it is held in Toledo and will follow the following route: Departure at four o’clock on Saturday afternoon from the Town Hall Square, continuation along Nuncio Viejo Street, Amador de los Ríos Square, Alfonso X “El Sabio” Street, San Vicente Square, Alfileritos Street, San Nicolás Square, Sillería Street, Zocodover Square, Barrio Rey Street, Magdalena Square, Tornerías Street, Plaza Mayor, Sixto Ramón Parro Street, Cardenal Cisneros Street and return to the Town Hall Square.

As for the toilets, they will be presided over by the mayor of Toledo, Emiliano García-Page, the vice-rector of the University of Castilla La Mancha, Evangelina Aranda and the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Crafts, Soledad Herrero.

The councilman of Culture, Angel Felpeto commented that the previous edition of this holiday was “very satisfactory” because “when we started we did not imagine where we were going to arrive.

Felpeto said that “the different activities that have been carried out were very well accepted and received by the people of Toledo” and this is due, as he argued, to the “very good show of collaboration of the institutions”.
